I strongly recommend you download and install GetRight before downloading any big files. If the server drops out during the download GetRight will allow you to resume the download where you left off and not have to download the whole file again.

Audio utilities

Xing mp3 encoder/player The excellent Xing mp3 encoder/player VERY fast and will encode a 4 minute song at 128Kbit in under 2 mins on a Pentium 200. That's about 6 times faster than opticom's mp3 producer. Excellent quality and is winning me over from Winamp. (1.8MB)

Audio catalyst 2.1 Audio catalyst combines the audio grabber CD audio extractor and the Xing MP3 encoder in one great program. It extracts digital audio tracks from CD and converts them into mp3 in one operation. It even bypasses the wav stage of conversion, if that option is selected and can extract a 4 min audio track from CD and encode it to mp3(at 128k)in less than 2 mins on a Pentium 200 machine. The audio extraction part of audio catalyst is almost identical to audio grabber and the mp3 encoding is carried out by the fast xing encoder. In a word TERRIFIC (3MB)

MP3-WAV   Converts MP3 tracks back to full size wav file.(380k) Not much use for this these days as Winamp can do it with the out_disk.dll plugin.
MP32 (130K)Allows Cooledit to load and play MP3 files. (Only for Cooledit 153 and 96. For cooledit pro use new plugin below)

CoolBlade (107K) Allows Cooledit to save to MP3 files (Only for Cooledit 153 and 96. For cooledit pro use new plugin below)

MP3 Trim Nice little prog this. It trims the silence at start and end of an MP3 and will do it automatically. Will also make a fade at start or end of track if required and can adjust overall volume of MP3. All done without decoding back to wav file, so no loss in quality. Instant opening and saving back from/to MP3. No install, just extract file and run. Free version limited to tracks under about 7mins.

Namewiz For renameing files in bulk. Useful for MP3 renaming, but not designed for ID3 etc File Size: 545 K
b

QuickTag Handy little program for automating the task of entering ID3 Tags into your MP3 files. This prog is excellent and made light work of creating ID3 tags from filenames of 650 songs in less than 1 min. No install, just extract file and run. File Size: 264 Kb

QuickMix Forces windows sound mixer to default to your choice of settings at startup, no matter what has changed it previously. File Size 262 Kb

NEW Cooledit Pro MP3 Plugin Very fast and good quality. Fully integrated into Cooledit Pro File Size: 500 Kb

High quality sound cards

These cards are designed purely for A to D conversion and don't have the synthersisers included which are not required for serious audio work and just incresed the noise floor of the board. The best solution is to have the sound card in an extrenal box away from the very noisy enviroment inside the PC. Its then possible to fit other decent additions like line level amps and proper audio connectors (have you ever tried fitting a ¼ inch jack to a sound card, let alone XLR's !!)

Digidesign (excellent card, but drivers a problem for the PC)

Creative (bloody good cards for the money. Has synth on-board)
